Daddy's good little angel. My memories of Edria Zafe have little to do with common interests and shared times together,
because it's all about faith. I may not be a Born-Again Christian like my daughter, but what difference does my being Catholic
make when the both of us share a common belief?
Strolling down memory lane, I remember admiring Edria a few years back because she was very pretty. Excluding
Nadia, it was because of “Emz” that I got to have introductions with the other members of her high-school barkada,
Idiottah. But as time went by, she not only became a good friend of mine, but also my daughter.
Daddy's Good Girl is a very talented young lady—she can dance, sing, act, etc. She also possesses a unique kind
of warmth that is rarely seen in teenagers today. I guess it stemmed from the outreach missions that she participates in in
their church. And that actually is the reason why I'm recommending her to take up either Pre-School or Special Education as
her baccalaureate course—she deals very well with children.
Then, in the summer of 2007, she texted me an inspirational quote on one blessed evening. Take note, she wasn't subscribed
to Globe's Unlimited Texting Service that night. From there, we began discussing the things that have kept her busy in the
past few weeks, and she told me one thing that still makes me grin to this day: “Daddy, I want you to be saved.”
I was admittedly surprised with her statement, but when I asked her to explain why, she said that she believes God will be
the only being who can actually grant us the salvation we all desire—but usually not work for.
From there, an instantaneous, robust bond was forged between the two of us, and we happily talk about our faith when
given the chance. My dream is to one day go out on an outreach program with “Bubu,” and just see how she really
deals with these forgotten members of our society.
In closing, I would like to share something that “heartist” Joey Velasco said (paraphrased version):
“In the Bible, we never saw Jesus write a book. In fact, the only time we saw Him write anything was when
he scribbled something in the sand, and it was blown away by the wind. Here we see that the Savior favors our marginalized
members of our society...I'd rather be an unknown painter, an unknown author and be able to reach out to these brothers and
sisters of ours, than to be popular and well-known, and get lost in the cityscape.”
God is good all the time! All the time, God is good!
